The Mexican Congress is bicameral – that is, it is composed of two chambers. The upper chamber is the Senate (Cámara de Senadores or Senado). The lower house is the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados).
Senate- 128 seats, 96 of those seats are elected by popular vote for 6 year terms; the other 32 seats are decided based on the population of the political party
Federal chambers- 500 seats, 300 seats are elected by popular vote to 3 year terms; the other 200 seats are decided by the population of the political parties
There is one federal Deputy for every 200,000 citizens; as of the most recent 2006 election, there are 500 deputies. There are two types of deputies: majority deputies and party deputies. The majority deputies, currently 300, are elected directly by plurality from single-member districts while the party deputies, currently 200, are assigned based on each party's share of the national vote, a process known as proportional representation. Deputies are elected for three year terms and not permitted to serve consecutive terms.
